Most casino game studios are going to incredible lengths to improve their designs and make slots that are more advanced or modern that the rest. And there are also Thunderkick, who after already achieving that goal with much success are going the other way by making games that look outdated. Flame Busters is exactly that – a retro arcade-style slot that was released in May 2017 but looks as though it came out of your Nintendo collection in the basement.
If you grew up kicking around in your local arcade, or even if you’re a younger fan of retro games, Flame Busters will definitely grab your attention. The game is set in 1986 and features an 8-bit screen with matching console audio where Roasty McFry and his team of Fire Busters are in charge of keeping a building safe from fires. Is it a bit childish? - Yes. But it’s also refreshingly amusing to play.
Design aside, Flame Busters is not just a game meant to entertain, but also one with plenty of extra features to see you properly cashed out. Flame Busters features a standard 5-reels design with 3 rows of symbols, but what isn’t standard are its 243 paylines which aren’t featured in many Thunderkick games. The coin range goes from 0.3 – 10, while the bet range is €/£ 0.10 – 100, which combined with its multiple extras and paytable adds up to plenty of chances to win some nice cash.
The good thing about Thunderkick’s slots is that they are built with mobile and desktop players in mind, and Flame Busters is no exception. The game’s natural orientation is landscape mode, which works great for any device.
When it comes to returns, Flame Busters comes with a fair 96.1% RTP. It’s not an ideal house edge, as there are games out there that do much better, but considering that most modern slots offer even less Flame Busters is definitely recommended.
Flame Busters is quite a simple game, yet not one without some extra features to help you maximize your wins. There are several things worth noting when it comes to this slot:
If you land at least 3 scatters (Alarm Bell), the slot will trigger the Bonus round where you can get up to 20 free spins during the first stage. If you’ve triggered the bonus feature with 3 scatters, you get 10 free spins, 4 will get you 15 free spins, and 5 will get you 20 free spins.
During the bonus round, you will once again have to watch for the Scatters (Alarm Bell), as landing 3 new Scatters will see one floor of the building unlocked to give you extra 2 free spins. There are five levels in total, each giving away 2 extra free spins when you collect 3 scatters on top the ones you’ve already triggered with the bonus round.
During the bonus round, if you unlock any floor of the building you will also automatically trigger the Coin Ignition feature, which would see your symbol with the lowest value turn into a Fire symbol (mystery symbol). Each floor you unlock will “ignite” more of your symbols (coins), which will then turn into any other symbol except the wild and scatter.
The base game also has a similar feature to the Coin Ignition called the Fire Drill. The Fire Drill is randomly triggered and would see 1-5 of your lowest symbols turn into the Fire symbol and then change into other random symbols.
Flame Busters is definitely recommended as it really has all that a great slot should have: fair RTP, good extras, creative design and immersive gameplay. It might feel a bit unusual on your first spin, but that’s what really makes it more interesting. Whether you’ve played arcades, love all things retro, or just want a unique gambling experience, Flame Busters just works!
