In every culture and region people honour and celebrate their deceased ancestors. There are holidays dedicated to the dead, and the living usually honour them in rather interesting ways. We know how Americans like to wear scary costumes for Halloween and in some parts of Eastern Europe, people spend the night on the cemetery and ‘hang out’ with their deceased relatives.
In Mexican culture, the Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos) is observed from October 31 to November 2, so it practically matches the Allhallowtide. Mexicans have a quite interesting way of celebrating Day of the Dead and this celebration has been listed as a cultural heritage by UNESCO.
Beautiful Bones is a Microgaming slot, based on this popular Mexican tradition. As one would expect from a Microgaming slot, it is very advanced, both in terms of graphics, as well as when it comes to features. Beautiful Bones was released towards the end of May 2017.
The graphics of this game is both scary and yet very colourful, even somehow cheerful. The reels are placed on a vivid and almost flashy purple background. The music is very Mexican to say so and it totally complements the graphics and the general theme of the game. The featured characters are both scary and beautiful. The game features animations, and the ‘dead’ symbols come to life whenever there’s a win or some other important event during the game.
The grid is regular, with 5 reels and 3 rows. There are 243 paylines. The number of coins is fixed to 30 and you don’t have an option of choosing the number of coins. However, you are free to choose the coin value, i.e. your total stake. The minimum stake amount is just 30p, or a penny per payline. The maximum wager is just £30, which is pretty low compared to most other slot games.
You may adjust your wager using the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ bet buttons. The amount is increased by 30p until it reaches £3, then it grows by 60p or 30p and from £6 onwards it is increased by £1.50p until £15, and from that amount it is always increased by £3 up to £30.
There is an auto spin button which allows you to set the reels to spin 10, 25, 50 or 100 times automatically, but even if you activate the auto spin, you can stop it any time.
When it comes to symbols, the list here includes 6 standard card symbols, staring with 9, then 10, J, Q, K, and A. The card symbols, as usual, are the lower valued symbols. For three card symbols you can expect a payment either lower or at best equal to the stake. For example, if you wager £3 and you get 3 9s across a payline you will receive £1.50, same goes for 10, J and Q, but for 3 Ks and As you will receive £3. Four card symbols always pay at least as much as the wager, or even twice as much. If you hit 5 Aces or 5 Kings you will receive £15 with a £3 wager.
The other five symbols are three masked ‘dead’ characters, two men and three ladies. The ladies are more valuable than the men and they can appear as stacked symbols on the second, third and fourth reel. Unlike the card symbols, with the characters you will receive payments even for a combination of two symbols, although the prizes for two symbols are rather low.
However, if you get five symbols of the same lady across a payline you will win a prize x10 your original wager and this is the most valuable main game jackpot. The sugar skull symbol is the scatter in this game, whereas a heart-shaped symbol, with the word ‘wild’ across it, is, obviously, the wild and it can substitute any symbol, except for the scatter.
The RTP percentage for Beautiful Bones is 96.55%, which is pretty much a standard percentage for high-profile slot games. Since anything above 96.50% is considered decent, there are not remarks regarding the RTP, it guarantees fair chances of winning.
There are two bonus features in this game. The standard free spins game is activated at moment when you manage to collect 10 scatter symbols (sugar skulls). These symbols can land anywhere on the reels. You can keep accumulating the symbols for a number of spins, but you have to keep the same wager level. If you change the stake then you will have to start collecting the scatter symbols again.
Once you collect 10 scatters, you can activate the free spins bonus game with 10 free spins accompanied with x3 multiplier, but if you like you can keep on going until you collect 20 scatter symbols and then you will win 15 free spins, while the multiplier will be increased to x4. You may also keep on collecting symbols and once you reach 30 symbols, the top bonus will be activated – 18 free spins with a multiplier of x5.
The Wild Spin Again is the second bonus feature, it is activated whenever there’s a winning combination of three symbols. It causes one of the symbols that participate in the combination to turn into a wild and remain in position for the awarded re-spin. This bonus feature is also active during free spins mode. The Wild Spin Again isn’t activated when there’s a 4-symbol or a 5-symbol winning combination.
Beautiful Bones may not have a high main game jackpot, but don’t let that fool you. The game is very playful and it will surely get you in a Halloween mood. Plus, the amounts that can be won during the free spins bonus can be quite hefty.
