Halloween Slot Review

Halloween is definitely one of the most prominent holidays in the English speaking world, and even globally. People love to celebrate it, but it has also been a popular theme amongst filmmakers for many years and online slots are much like films in terms of which themes go well with the audience. Halloween is scary but also funny, the costumes are flashy and lavish, and the atmosphere is tense, all that makes Halloween a perfect theme for video slot games.

There are plenty of Halloween themed games. Some are based on the concept of Halloween itself, whereas other are designed after popular Halloween shows, films or books. Microgaming’s Halloween slot that was released in 2017 is based on the most iconic Halloween film of 1978.

Microgaming Halloween Slot Graphic Features

This slot game is extremely unique when it comes to style, features, design and graphic elements. There are a lot of novelties and that is certainly appreciated by players, at least by those who don’t want to see the same sort of animations and features over and over again. Even the layout is original and different.

The reels are set on a background where you can see the house from the famous film and the music and sound effects are quite scary, just like you would expect from a game inspired by Halloween. The reels and rows aren’t always fixed, the number of positions in each reel varies from spin to spin.

Microgaming Halloween Slot Reels and Paylines

There are 5 reels, but the number of rows varies. There are 3 reels which have 4 symbols, whereas the remaining 2 have only 3 symbols each. The outline of the reels varies and in one spin it’s the three leftmost reels that feature 4 symbols each, then it is the 3 central reels and then the 3 rightmost reels. The paylines also vary depending on the outline of the reels. There are 50 paylines during every spin and that cannot be changed, you always play on all paylines. However the particular paylines vary depending on the outline for the current spin.

When it comes to the stake, you may adjust it. You can place just one coin per payline and the coins can be worth as little as one penny each. In that case the total stake would be 50p. But, you may wager up to a maximum of 8 coins per line and set the coin value at 50p per coin, in which case your total stake would be £400. There’s also a special ‘max bet’ button if you wish to wager the full amount.

Microgaming Halloween Slot Symbols and Payouts

When it comes to symbols, there are 6 regular objects that appear in the film, as well as the film characters who are also symbols.

Needless and wool, matches, a phone, a mask, a gun and a knife are the standard low value symbols. You will get payout for a combination of at least three symbols across a payline, but bear in mind that the payout is quite low. For example, you will only get 1p for a combo of needless and wool or matches, if your stake is 50p. For the remaining 4 symbols you can get a payout of 2p or 3p if you wager the minimum amount.

You will get a lot more money for a combination of 4 symbols, but the payout will be still lower than your full wager. If you get a combo of 5 guns you will get an amount that is two times your stake.

The four high value symbols are the film characters – Lynda, Annie, Loomis and Laurie. Every winning combination that includes at least 4 characters pays more than your stake, and for four Laurie symbols you will get twice your stake. If you manage to hit five Laurie symbols you will be rewarded with a prize that’s 10 times your full wager. There’s a wild symbol (Halloween logo) and a bonus symbol (pumpkin), and the wild substitutes all other symbols, except for the pumpkin.

Microgaming Halloween Slot RTP

This game’s RTP is just a bit above 96%, it is in fact 96.01%, which makes it rather standard, and it is not too high nor too low. That being said, the game has a medium to high level of volatility, which means that you can’t expect to win too often, but the prizes themselves are rather generous.

Microgaming Halloween Slot Bonus Features

We have already mentioned that the reels differ and at least 3 of them feature 4 symbols each. One these wandering reels, a jumbo block may appear. A jumbo block is a massive symbol that covers the entire block of enhanced reels, i.e. up to a total of 12 positions. The film characters can appear as jumbo blocks and provided that there’s at least one additional such symbol on the other reels you may win some pretty heavy prizes.

If you get at least three bonus symbols the Trick or Treat bonus will be activated. You just need to spin the wheel and see where it lands. The prizes may vary and the wheel will keep on spinning until you hit either the Boogieman Bonus or the Free Spins Bonus.

In the Boogieman bonus you will get to pick from different leaves which reward you with cash prizes. The prizes are multiplied and you may win a prize worth as much as x20 your total stake. If you hit Michael you will lose half your money and the feature will end, but a knife will stop Michael from finishing the feature.

The Free Spins Bonus is activated whenever you hit either Lynda, Annie, Laurie or Loomis on the Trick or Treat Wheel. The prize is always 9 spins and the character who activated it will always appear during the free spins. That character will also appear on the wandering reels, with the opportunity of granting you large wins. The Free Spins game cannot be re-triggered.

Microgaming Halloween Slot Verdict

If there’s one thing that can be said about this game it is that is very original and innovative in terms of features. Everything looks new and that’s rather refreshing. The RTP is pretty standard, but you can chase some pretty high prizes. All in all, it is a very enjoyable game that will keep you glued to the screen.
